2011 Hyde Park World Championship Series Triathlon

One of the amazing things about living in London is having access to truly world class entertainment – be it art exhibits, theatre, restaurants, or sport.  On Sunday I was fortunate enough to be able to watch the 2011 World Championship Series Triathlon men’s race held at Hyde Park.  The London 2012 Olympics venue.  It was spectacular.

There are lots of points of view as to whether or not the race format, which allows for drafting on the bicycle leg, is truly representative of the sport of triathlon.  Regardless of what you think, the fact is that the athletes are simply incredible.  They are superior open water swimmers, pwerful cyclists, and amazing runners.  And the venue?  World class.  So spectator friendly.  I found myself right at the transition bike mount line, able to watch all of the laps on the bike and run from a front row spot.  I could see the swim by simply turning around and facing the Serpentine Lake.  We were right where the athletes paraded out, and in clear view of the awards.  It was a fantastic event.

If you haven’t ever seen a triathlon, I highly recommend spectating at one – the fastest athletes are just incredible to see, and amateur participants grateful for the support.  Spectating is a way to give back to a sport like triathlon – and it will make you want to get out and swim bike run!

Here are some photos from the day – all taken on my iPhone.  I was that close to the action. Gripping, exciting, breathtaking, awe-inspiring.
